Smooth and quiet are good because it can be a rough, noisy world out there at times. This quietude can be shared with others. The 2004 lexus es 330 can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph nearly a full second quicker than last year's model, which is a significant improvement that can be felt by the driver. More important, the es 330 is more responsive when driving around town. The five-speed automatic transmission has been revised for 2004 for smoother shifting and improved response. The lexus es 330 is so smooth that at times it feels seamless in operation.  the 2004 model year brings a host of other advancements that improve on this luxurious mid-size sedan. Among them: new and improved airbags, an upgraded passenger seat, and an enhanced navigation system.  the es 330 delivers a compelling combination of quality, comfort, refinement, and value. Lexus has a reputation for exceptional quality and behind the high-quality fit and finish is a great deal of careful design and detail work. Living with this car is easy. It's loaded with features that make life more convenient. Also standard are automatic dual-zone climate control with interior air filter, power windows with auto up/down and jam protection, and a power moonroof. An am/fm/cd/cassette system comes standard with 86 watts and seven speakers. A 240-watt mark levinson audio system is optional.  options include vehicle stability control with traction control and brake assist 650); adaptive variable suspension 620); dvd satellite navigation 2,220); power-adjustable pedals 140); power rear sunshade 210); high intensity discharge headlamps with rain-sensing wipers 640); heated front seats 440); wood steering wheel and shift knob 330); chrome wheels with all-season tires 1700).  safety was a top priority when designing the es 330. The front seats are designed to reduce whiplash. To help the driver avoid accidents in the first place, the es 330 comes standard with anti-lock disc brakes (abs) and electronic brake-force distribution (ebd). walkaroundthe lexus es 330 is based on the toyota camry, but is distinguished by unique styling. The rake of the es 330 combined with its streaked-back headlamps make a striking statement. The front end seems to slope down in one continuous curve, from the top of the windshield, over the sculpted hood and tidy dark grille, down to the smooth air dam under the almost seamless front bumper. The headlight cluster suggests silvery eyes pulled back at the corners.  tail lamps trimmed in silver echo the design, stretching around the corners, as if reaching to meet the headlamps. Nine-spoke alloy wheels complement the styling. It can be felt in the solid sound the doors, trunk and hood when they're closed. But sometimes the quality is hidden: the underbody is smooth, nearly flat, contributing to exceptional aerodynamic efficiency (with a coefficient of drag of just 0. 28), and the car is constructed using advanced composites and resin-steel sandwiches to further minimize the intrusion of noise. interiorthe lexus es 330 presents a warm, inviting interior. It has a warmer ambience than the german cars, namely the mercedes-benz c-class and the bmw 3 series. It harmonizes with the brushed aluminum trim, however. All of the trim materials exude a high-quality look and feel. The standard steering wheel and shift lever are covered with stitched leather and look very nice. An all-walnut handle for the shift lever and a walnut-trimmed steering wheel are available for an even more prestigious appearance. Regardless, the steering column is manually adjustable for tilt.  the standard leather upholstery is quite nice and is available in ivory, charcoal, or black. The seats are very comfortable and the seating position is excellent, with lots of front-seat legroom. Optional power-adjustable pedals are a good idea for shorter drivers because they help them to find a good driving position without sitting too close to the airbag-equipped steering wheel. The seats are relatively flat, without large bolsters, making getting in and out easier. The driver's seat comes standard with 10-way power adjustments. For 2004, the power-adjustable front passenger's seat has eight settings, including power lumbar adjustment. The shape and construction of the front seats is borrowed from the flagship ls 430.  the es 330 is about 10-percent larger inside than a mercedes-benz c-class and the front seats of the lexus offer significantly more hip room than the mercedes. Five is a crowd, but it'll work for short distances, like going to a restaurant, particularly if a member of the little people is sitting in the rear center position. The self-dimming outside mirrors offer a good view rearward and seem larger than those on mercedes-benz cars. The inside rearview mirror is self-dimming (electrochromic) and features a digital compass. The slope of the rear window doesn't allow a panoramic view, though it fills the rearview mirror. The mirror is mounted so close to the headliner that adjusting it requires an awkward grab at its bottom edge. An optional power rear shade filters out the blazing sun, whether driving or parked.  the clean-looking instrument panel features three round, deeply recessed pods with highly legible analog gauges in white-on-black graphics illuminated when the key is turned. Centered is a large analog speedometer. A digital trip computer at the bottom of the speedometer displays range, average fuel consumption and other functions, controlled by a pair of buttons on the left side of the steering wheel. Similarly, a digital odometer with two trip odometers is displayed in the right pod with big analog fuel and temperature gauges. It's a powerful system, but like most of these systems requires some experience and study to master. Technophobes should avoid this option as they may become frustrated and simply not use. driving impressionthe lexus es 330 delivers a smooth, refined driving experience with a smooth engine and transmission, a smooth-riding suspension, smooth brakes, and extensive measures designed to reduce noise, vibration and harshness.  the 2004 model's 3. 3-liter v6 engine, which replaces the previous 3. 0-liter v6, produces 225 horsepower and 240 pounds-feet of torque (compared with last year's 210 hp and 220 lbs.-ft.). The larger displacement endows the es 330 with better performance. The increased torque improves the car's responsiveness in everyday driving situations. According to lexus, the es 330 can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 7. 2 seconds. It's a responsive engine, but the es 330 is not lightning quick. The es 330 has an epa city/highway fuel economy rating of 20/29 mpg and is certified by the government as an ultra low emissions vehicle (ulev ii).  the transmission was revised for 2004 for smoother shifting and it shifts very smoothly. Upshifts in normal, everyday driving are almost invisible, but the transmission is responsive when driving aggressively. Downshifts are responsive but smooth, a big improvement over last year's transmission. Also, less downshifting is needed with the increased torque and wider power band of the large. First look at all-new luxury utility vehicle. introductionwith the rx 300, lexus has had the best-selling luxury suv in not only america but the world. But the rx 300 was introduced in 1998 and, with a growing number of challengers, lexus can't afford to stand still. (no one can.) therefore, the rx 300 has been replaced by the all-new 2004 lexus rx 330.  lexus calls the rx 330 a luxury utility vehicle, and is bold enough to dub it an 'luv.' the rx 330 falls into that category of suv that is based on a unit-body car platform rather than a truck frame, and it could be called a crossover vehicle. It comes with a leather interior that feels soft and warm and inviting with splashes of real wood trim. Rx 330 2wd 35,025) uses front-wheel drive. Rx 330 4wd 36,425) has an all-wheel drive system. The premium package 2,145) includes leather, power tilt/telescope steering wheel, roof rack, and moonroof. The premium plus package 3,440) adds a power liftgate, hid headlamps and a wood and leather steering wheel.  the performance package 5,455) includes all of the items in the premium package, plus 18-inch plated aluminum alloy wheels, air suspension, sequential shifting transmission, power rear door, hid headlamps with afs (see walkaround), and rain-sensing wipers. There's also a multi-panel moonroof available that's larger than the standard moonroof with other features bundled in for $4,220. An available navigation system includes a rear-view camera 2,350). There's more rake to the windshield as well, and the front facia and headlamps are reminiscent of the lexus es 300 sedan.  although there are definite car cues to the new design, lexus designers have also included meatier elements, such as the beefy front bumper and pronounced fender flares. Well-designed door handles are of the reach-through type that are more hand-friendly than the fingertip-grip variety, less chance of breaking long fingernails.  a novel feature, something not seen on the u. Market since the 1949 tucker, is the adaptive front lighting system (afs). This system swivels the left and right headlamp as determined by an onboard processor that calculates the optimum angle to provide the best illumination, allowing drivers to see around corners better. It's available only as part of the performance package.  a rear view of the rx 330 reveals a visor over the top edge of the rear window, a short radio antenna at the right rear corner of the roof (promising better reception in marginal areas than the imbedded-in-glass type), and clear-lensed taillamps. The latter are trendy with the sport compact kids; we think they should stay there, as these don't seem to be as visible, especially in bright sunlight, as the old-fogy red lenses.  the lexus rx 330 competes with the volvo xc90 33,350), acura mdx 34,900), mercedes-benz m-class 37,670), bmw x5 39,995), and infiniti fx45 44,225), among others. The rx 330 utilizes a modified version of the platform used by the lexus es300 sedan, toyota camry, and toyota highlander sport-utility. interiorit doesn't take more than a glance inside to know the lexus rx 330 is aimed at the luxury suv market. Leather on the seats (on most models) is soft and slightly bunched, and there are splashes of real wood trim on the doors and center console. The instrument panel has three large round gauges trimmed in silver. The center dash area, or stack, is framed in metal-looking plastic.  climate controls are located high on the center stack and to either side of an lcd screen used to control ventilation, audio, trip computer, outside temperature and clock (with alarm). The radio has a knobs for volume and tuning, much easier to use than the typical german system that has tuning buttons that default to a seek mode.  the screen is also used for the optional navigation system as well as the rear-view camera that comes with it. The camera works automatically when the transmission is shifted into reverse. Big outside mirrors afford a good view rearward.  a novelty when the rx 300 was introduced, the shifter for the automatic transmission is still located on the center stack. Rather than the popular tip-shift for sportier rides, the rx 330's shifter has a zig-zag pattern for shifting between gears. We found it made shifting between reverse, drive and lower gears ponderous, particularly when in a hurry.  the front seats are positioned off the floor at a comfortable chair height and are snug and supportive. Foldable armrests on both front seats provide additional comfort on longer trips. The center console slides forward and back, allowing room for a purse or whatever on the floor between the front seats.  the back seats are roomy and comfortable. There's a folding center armrest with cupholders, storage and its own wood trim. That's more cargo space than a lincoln aviator (77. 1) or infiniti fx35 (64. 5) and certainly more than a bmw x5 (54. 4) has to offer. But the rx 330's rear seats don't fold for a completely flat cargo floor. We found loading and unloading a mountain bike easier in a mercury mountaineer. The rx 330 adds two hidden compartments under the cargo floor for additional storage. The side-impact airbags, standard, are large, protecting the torso, abdomen and hips.  lexus link is an optional system that summons aid, using satellite and cell phone technology, at the touch of a button or automatically with airbag deployment. Based on gm's onstar system, lexus link can also pinpoint vehicle location for roadside assistance, or in case of theft. However, many of them ride like trucks, get poor gas mileage, and are tall and tippy. This has led to the popularity of models based on car platforms, of which the original lexus rx 300 was the pioneer.  the new lexus rx 330 is an advance in this mien. It's notable for its smooth ride even over broken, potholed pavement. Like the previous rx 300, the rx 330 should be good on dirt and gravel roads as well, though we haven't tried this. We found the rx 330 poised in corners, the steering light and accurate. Its fully independent suspension keeps the tires in contact with the pavement for lots of grip.  the 3. 3-liter v6 zips the rx 330 to speed (from 0 to 60 mph in 7. 8 seconds, according to lexus). Larger than last year's engine, the v6 develops a healthy 230 horsepower and 242 pounds-feet of torque. Torque is the twist that yields acceleration, and the rx 330's torque peak comes at a relatively low 3600 rpm. The lower first gear allows quicker dig off the line, good when having to merge into traffic from a standing start. The higher fifth gear allows lower revs at cruise, which translates into quieter running with less engine noise, plus better gas mileage and longer engine life because the engine doesn't go around as many times. At times, the transmission seemed slow to downshift, however.  the rx 330 is free from road noise and wind noise even when equipped with a roof rack. Lexus engineers took the time to aer.
