The foregoing model's fixation with ovals, ovals, ovals is replaced by an attractive contemporary appearance that confidently leads the way to ford's future.  but the 2000 taurus is more than just a styling exercise. Upgraded powertrains provide vigorous response. Its handling, while suitably smooth and comfortable, delivers a sporting crispness that will satisfy even the aspiring formula 1 driver in the family. The new taurus cabin is functional and attractive, with controls that are straightforward and easy to use. The materials, switchgear and interior textures have a high-quality look and feel. The upscale svg includes anti-lock braking (abs), power driver's seat, 60/40 split fold-down rear seat and dual lighted vanity mirrors. The se comfort adds to this machined five-spoke alloy wheels, leather seating and electronic automatic climate control. But this new model has a more muscular, forceful appearance that sets it apart from earlier renderings. The grille is slightly broader and more aggressive looking than before. The headlights are larger and produce 25-percent brighter low beams, 20-percent brighter high beams. The new car's flanks have handsomely modeled character lines, and the rear bears a resemblance to the mildly controversial stern of the jaguar s-type, applauded by some, found ponderous by others. The new model allows nearly an inch more headroom for front-seat passengers and nearly two inches more headroom in the rear. The power window automatic-down circuit operates the driver's-side window only, and there is no automatic-up. On the dashboard just below the tachometer is an on/off switch for the se's traction control, useful when driving with chains and/or in snow.  the central console containing audio and (hvac) heating, ventilation and air conditioning controls is an intimidating sea of similar-looking push-buttons and toggle switches. While elsewhere the taurus is ergonomically first rate, operating the controls on this panel requires very careful reading of the various closely spaced buttons. Among the audio controls, only the volume control is a radial knob--it would be more convenient to have the station-tuner a radial knob as well. The removable six-cd changer cassette was cleverly concealed in the center console at the driver's right elbow. This is far more convenient than the remote 12-cd changers commonly hidden in the trunk of other cars. Opening the sunroof required only one touch of the button, whereupon it opened automatically. The cushions and seatbacks are not cushy, but firm seats are usually best on long drives. Each of the se comfort's lighted vanity mirrors in the two front visors features a rheostat for regulating their brightness, a novel touch.  the roomy rear three-place seating includes two semi-buckets and a pull-down central armrest containing two cupholders. An hvac duct at the rear of the center console provides climate control for rear passengers. Dual baby-seat anchors are provided on each side of the rear seat. The trunk is of generous size and contains the taurus' mini-spare tire. driving impressionwhile the 2000 taurus is rich with interesting features, no list of hardware can sum up this car's greatest strength--its behavior on the road. In the past, the driving manners of the taurus have been utilitarian; it did everything competently but without cause for excitement. And surely, the base lx model maintains that familiar marketing position. After all, ford has had no trouble selling huge numbers of this sedan.  but the 2000 se comfort we tested has an excitingly new personality. This engine not only provides good thrust, it makes an understated but nicely throaty declaration that it means business. Its shifts are positive, authoritative, and at the same time, almost impossible to feel. As a family sedan, the se comfort's gas-pressurized shock absorbers provide a smooth, impact-free ride. Yet when pushed in the corners, the comfort proves stable, nimble and ready for more. Cornered hard, its body roll is moderate, and the nicely tuned variable-ratio power rack-and-pinion steering delivers a steady stream of road-information alerts every step of the way. The first ponycar is still the dominant player. introductionford's mustang was completely redesigned and re-engineered last year (1999), with improvements to every single system under its brand-new skin. But all the best traits of the mustang, the original pony car, remain. There's plenty of torque. There are japanese and korean coupes that compete with mustang on price, but they don't offer pony car performance. lineuplike the gm pony cars, the ford mustang comes in many guises. There are v6 and v8 versions in both coupe and convertible body styles. There's also the cobra, a super-performance model (available as a coupe or convertible) that competes against the camaro ss and the firebird ram air. Mustang gt models come with a 4. 6-liter overhead-cam v8 that produces 260 horsepower. Both engines offer substantially more power this year. The limited-production svt cobra and cobra convertible models come with special 32-valve double overhead-cam engines.  prices for the mustang coupes: base 16,520), gt 21,015), cobra 27,605). Convertible prices: base 21,370), gt 25,270), cobra 31,605). walkaroundredesigned for 1999, mustang's design features chiseled lines that give it a muscular appearance. The original 1964 mustang influenced this design. The rear fender air intake is twice as long as the previous generation mustang, with sharp corners and much more pronounced lines. The rocker panels curve out, and the fenders have pronounced front and rear wheel well arches. This gives the car a racier stance than the previous model. The front features wraparound complex reflector headlamps with integrated side marker lamps, and a larger grille opening with a honeycomb grille texture and a chrome pony emblem reminiscent of the original 1964 car. The seat foam is much better than the previous-generation mustang. The seat tracks were redesigned to add 1 inch of additional rearward travel to better accommodate taller drivers, and seat belts have been attached to the seats to move with them. There's a six-way power driver's seat, along with fabrics and sew patterns in cloth and optional leather. Embossed ponies on the upper portions of the seat backrests give the interior a sporty, traditional mustang look. Medium graphite, medium parchment and midnight black are the standard interior colors. The instrument panel, the center console and the headliner are color-keyed in 2000 models.  the interior is nice and cozy in the coupe. There's enough seat track length to accommodate tall drivers and just enough elbowroom to keep from feeling cramped. The mustang's back seat is small, with only enough room for small objects or kids. The trunk is small with an even smaller opening. The split fold-down rear seat is handy for hauling cargo.  three new colors are offered for 2000. A 16-inch tire and wheel package is included in the v6 model appearance package. An 80-watt premium sound system comes standard on all models. A cd/radio combination, a cd/cassette system, and the mach 460 system are available as options. driving impressionperformance is what the mustang gt is about. Its 4. 6-liter sohc modular v8 engine produces 260 horsepower at 5000 rpm with 302 foot-pounds of torque at 4000 rpm. The engine features revised camshafts, intake manifold runners, and larger valves for improved airflow above 3000 rpm. A new coil-on-plug ignition system replaces the previous ignition system for higher energy spark. The gt engine sounds great, whether cruising or at full throttle.  power from the mustang's 3. 8-liter split-port v6 engine is up substantially as well. It has been increased from 150 horsepower to 190 horsepower at 5250 rpm, with 225 foot-pounds of torque at 3000 rpm.  all models, regardless of engine or transmission, get a 3. 27:1 rear axle ratio. Both transmissions shift smoothly. The flexibility of both the v8 and v6 engines make good mates for the transmissions, which feature sufficient strength to take high-rpm shifts for the life of the car. The 4-speed automatic transmission has been recalibrated for smoother upshifts. The 5-speed tremec manual transmissions are carried over from 1999, with the v6 using the t-5 and the v8 using the t-45. The bosch system works at all speeds to reduce wheelspin. Whenever wheelspin is detected, the system retards ignition timing, cuts fuel flow, and activates the brakes at one or both drive wheels, in that order. This car involves the driver. Most of the raw edges and choppiness of the mustang's old suspension behavior have been smoothed out. Engineers retuned the rear suspension for improved compliance by increasing suspension travel. This reduces ride harshness. The gt has linear-rate springs, up in front to 450 pounds per inch. At the rear, the old springs were swapped out in favor of 210 pound per inch linear-rate springs. These decrease the mustang's ride stiffness and improve steering feel and response.  the steering is more direct and more positive than pre-1999 mustangs. A revised boost curve gives the steering more linear response and better on-center feel. The turning circle has been reduced by 3 feet through changes to the steering rack, the lower control arms and front stabilizer bars.  the braking system was re-engineered for 1999, with new aluminum twin-piston front calipers reduce front unsprung weight by a significant 10 pounds. The new calipers also contribute to greatly improved brake pedal feel. A new master cylinder design improves the ratio of brake pedal travel to brake force and improves pedal modulation. Abs is still optional for 2000 and must be ordered to get the traction control system. summarythe camaro and firebird are slightly more powerful than the mustang gt. The mustang gt is also less expensive than either of the gm pony cars by several thousand dollars. Both the camaro and firebird are slated for extinction in the near future, which will leave the mustang as the sole pony car. Thinking outside the (econo) box. introductionthe ford focus is a ground-up re-evaluation of the subcompact. For years, the small car has been a shrunken version of the standard sedan. Ford studied the needs of passengers and designed the focus from the inside out. Ford has instead positioned its focus hatchback as a sports model and named it the zx3. (the model designation is derived from the ford escort zx2 coupe.) ford focus zx3 comes with such sporty accoutrements as 15-inch aluminum wheels, fog lights and a more powerful 130-horsepower twin-cam engine. Only a limited number of options are available for the zx3 11,960).  zx3 comes with a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Options include side-impact air bags, anti-lock brakes and remote locking. Not available on the zx3, however, are power windows, cruise control and the tilt/telescoping steering column offered on other focus models. The only additional zx3 options include floor mats, smoker's package (lighter and ashtray), and an engine block heater. walkaroundwe drove the focus zx3 hatchback and it didn't take long to figure out that this is a car that is noticed. Its new edge styling, with tidy creases that define intersecting arcs, looks simpler than it really is. Large pie-section headlamps give the front end a distinctive appearance. On the zx3, they are joined by fog lamps in the grille opening below the bumper. There's a similar, but smaller opening above the bumper that houses the turn signals. Both are outlined by arcs. The front and rear fenders are highlighted with geometric curves creased into the sheetmetal. The roofline is highly arched, particularly noticeable when parked next to another car. The roofline is truncated just aft of the rear axle line. Wedge-shaped tail lamps set in the c-pillars enliven an otherwise plain rear end. Ford claims the tail lamps are more noticeable in that location and reduce repair costs in minor accidents. However, the sedan and wagon have conventionally placed tail lamps, so we'll accept the unique shape and location as distinctive and effective styling.  lower bodyside pvc coating provides protection from stone dings on all models, and the underbody gets pvc coating as well. Clearcoat paint is standard across the board. The zx3 and lx have black rather than body-color bodyside protective molding, but this is offset on the zx3 by black rocker panels. The door handles on all models are black as well. The new edge styling extends to the interior. The dash is a collection of arcs, the instrument panel covered by an asymmetrically curved and sharply creased bezel. A 7000-rpm tachometer flanks a 140-mph speedometer in the zx3. Both instruments are round and easily readable, clearly marked with white numerals on black, though the tach has no redline. The fuel gauge has a small arrow pointing to the right, denoting on which side the filler is located, appreciated by those of us who drive a number of cars, have bad memories or both.  the center dash panel is formed by an arc that sweeps upward across the dash to the right side of the car and an inverted parabola. The radio fits into the top of this area and includes a single-disc cd player. Snuggled in to the left is the cigarette lighter/ash tray. Circular ventilation controls, less frequently accessed, fit below the radio and are styled in the new edge theme, with buttons styled to fit the room available. The trunk release, on the left end of the dash, is triangular as well, shaped to fit into the intersection of the arcs outlining the instrument panel.  the overall asymmetry lends an informal air to the interior, but the feel of the interior is rich. The control knobs all have distinctive shapes for easy identification; rotary controls are rubberized for pleasing soft-touch operation. The steering wheel on the zx3 is leather-covered and satisfying to touch. Even the plastics used on the dash and door panels have a finger-friendly soft-touch feel.  the seats are comfortable with an exceptionally high hip point, 20 inches above the ground. The advantages of this seating include a better view down the road, plus more effective leg room front and rear, and it takes advantage of the focus' roofline with headroom for the long and tall. It also makes entry and exit easier. Once back there, however, rear seat riders have lots of legroom, thanks to widely spaced runners under the front seats, plus adult-sized head and shoulder room. Versatility of the hatchback design is lost on most americans, who prefer the more formal sedan profile with its conventional trunk, but this design is hugely popular among europeans for its practicality. Clutch take-up is good and easy to modulate. Shifting into first gear reveals a rubbery feel to the linkage of the long-shafted shifter. It feels like a saab shifter; it's precise but not inviting. The 130-horsepower engine answers a heavy foot with surprisingly rapid acceleration, a benefit of a lightweight car with well-developed torque characteristics. Fully 80 percent of the engine's maximum torque is available from idle to 6000 rpm; peak torque of 135 foot-pounds comes at 4500 rpm. Making the zx3 even more satisfying to drive is ford's excellent control of noise, vibration and harshness in this engine. Response through the rack-and-pinion steering is quick and precise, and feedback is excellent. The car feels like it is leaning in corners more than it actually is because the driver is sitting higher in the saddle. We'd like to trade the 70-series tires that come on the zx3 hatchback for the 60-series tires that come on the zts sedan.  the zx3 cruises easily on the interstate. The engine is quiet and wind noise is subdued. Ordinary roads feel smooth, while well-maintained superhighways feel velvety. Cruise control would be a welcome feature. summarythe ford focus breaks new ground in economy car design. The zx3 hatchback proves the economical and practical can also be sporty and fun.  overall, the focus shows that ford has done some thinking outside the box.
