2001 chrysler pt cruiser review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Looks are only the beginning. introductionthere's nothing on the road quite like chrysler's new pt cruiser, and that's a big part of its fun. People from all walks and stations want a better look, intrigued by the cruiser's difficult-to-define character.  yet the really great thing about the pt cruiser is its combination of practicality and a reasonable price. Chrysler turned the automotive industry on its ear when it launched the dodge viper and plymouth prowler. Those cars showcased chrysler's design trends. Viper and prowler are great cars for serious enthusiasts who don't mind making a few sacrifices in terms of comfort and convenience. But, in a way, the pt cruiser is even more exciting because it's a real car suitable for everyday use by everyday people. When it comes to automotive styling, however, pictures speak louder than words. Yet with 63 inches from pavement to the highest point of its roof, the cruiser is also 7 inches taller than a neon, and nearly as tall as some minivans. That height is a crucial element of the pt cruiser's design.  the pt cruiser has a thorough complement of safety features. Front passenger side-impact airbags are standard on the limited edition and optional on the base car. Seatbelts should always be worn, however, and the pt cruiser comes with three-point safety harnesses at all positions-including the rear seat's center position. The front belts have pyrotechnically charged tensioners, just like luxury cars, to keep the belts tight during an impact. The rear bench is equipped with child-seat tethers. interiorinside, the cruiser's t-shaped symmetrical dashboard uses painted inserts to pull exterior styling themes into the cabin. The instrument panel is clean, functional and aesthetically pleasing. The driver faces three white-faced gauges set in individual cylinders, with speedometer center, tachometer right and fuel and water temperature left. Switches are concentrated in the center panel, with radial-type climate control dials and a single pair of buttons for the front windows. The door levers have a nice action and the switches operate with good tactile feel -- not world class, but a noticeable improvement over chrysler's sloppy mid-'90s standard.  the same improvement applies to the interior finish. The leather package, in particular, has a rich appearance, given the cruiser's price, with suede inserts in the doors and along the lower cushion edges.  the front seats have a reasonable amount of bolster to keep driver and passenger from sliding side to side. Perhaps more important, the seating position is upright, with a fairly high, commanding view ahead, much like a sport-utility vehicle or minivan. And with 120. 2 cubic feet of interior volume, there's no premium on space in the pt cruiser. The government's standard for defining a large car, like the mercedes-benz s-class or lincoln town car, is 120 cubic feet.  all that space is largely a function of the cruiser's height. Its roof rises toward the rear, and its rear seat bottoms are higher than those in front are. The front seats are mounted on tall boxes, leaving plenty of room for rear passengers to stretch their legs underneath. An auto critic who stands six feet-nine-inches tall fit comfortably front or rear, in his preferred upright seating position.  chrysler claims the pt cruiser's cabin can be configured 26 different ways. We didn't count, but there are clearly a lot of options. This flexibility stems from three features: a 65/35 split rear bench that can be folded flat, tumbled forward or removed, a movable parcel shelf, and an available front passenger seat that folds flat. The rear seats are anchored with quick-release attachments, and fitted with suitcase-style handles for lifting and steel wheels for rolling. The smaller section weighs 35 pounds, and the larger, 65. The load floor measures 40 inches between the wheel wells. The rear cabin has lots of tie-downs, including a pair on the center pillars that can be used with various seat configurations.  the parcel shelf and front passenger seat increase hauling options. The shelf can be positioned at the top of the rear seatbacks for a standard privacy cover over the cargo hold. It can be lowered to a level that creates a flat floor when the rear seat backs are folded forward. In can be installed vertically across the width of the cabin to divide the cargo hold, or hung out of the tailgate as a small table. It can also be turned over so its hard-plastic underside acts like a large tray, containing drops from dripping paint cans or mud from work boots.  with the front passenger seatback folded flat onto the bottom cushion, there's a table next to the driver and in front of the rear passengers. Even better, there can be more than 8 feet of flat surface between the dashboard and the tailgate. It weighs 3123 pounds with the manual transmission, meaning each of its 150 horsepower pulls roughly 21 pounds of iron. The 2. 4 happens to be the base engine in chrysler's minivans; for the cruiser, improvements were geared toward reducing noise and vibration rather than increasing power. Peak horsepower remains at 150, with 162 foot-pounds of torque. The shifter is surprisingly precise; it's not sports-car grade, but not bad for a longer-throw gate with a lever that's a foot long. Working the gears to get the most from the engine is a pleasant proposition in nearly all circumstances.  the automatic isn't as effective as the five-speed at getting the cruiser cruising, because the 2. 4's power is biased toward higher rpm. With properly timed dips of the accelerator, there's enough torque for safe, clean overtaking on two-lane roads.  the cruiser handles more like a sedan than a minivan. It will hustle with good composure and reasonable verve. Body lean is well controlled. By design, the cruiser understeers moderately, a push that warns a driver to slow down through curves. The cruiser's strut-type independent front suspension is similar to the neon's. Its rear suspension design maximizes cargo space, but the solid rear axle bounces a bit on rough pavement. Overall, however, chrysler's suspension engineers have delivered a good balance of handling and a comfortable ride.  they've also done a fine job of masking the cruiser's height. Only in quick, hard, slalom-type maneuvers does the pt cruiser start get top heavy. Yet most drivers will never drive hard enough to notice. And in sudden, emergency-type lane changes, the pt cruiser is more composed than the typical sport-utility or minivan. At speeds beyond legal interstate limits, the cruiser is stable, and not particularly susceptible to cross winds.  a lack of noise may be the most impressive, or surprising, of all the pt cruiser's qualities. There is little wind noise, almost no tire or road noise, and just an audible whine from the drivetrain. It has better noise, vibration and harshness control than chrysler products of the mid- to late 1990s have conditioned us to expect.  front disc and rear drum brakes are standard. With sporty handling, exhilarating acceleration and powerful braking, the cts is a sports sedan in the truest sense.  introduced as a 2003 model, the cts launched an edgy new styling theme at cadillac and immediately grabbed the spotlight. The automotive press praised the dynamic qualities built into its superb rear-wheel-drive chassis. A torrent of new models has followed from cadillac, all very good in their own right, but the cts set the mold.  since its launch, the cts has been improved and refined. For 2006, a new sport performance option enhances its sporting character, while a sport appearance package can give every cts the look of the mighty, corvette-powered cts-v. These options complement the new generation of v6 engines and transmissions introduced for 2005.  all of the cts drivelines are smooth, quiet and powerful, with the latest technology and advanced electronic controls throughout. Yet the manual is remarkable for its smooth shifting and easygoing clutch. The cts-v is a great hot rod, but the other cts models are far more pleasant for daily driving.  we love the cts's balance of good ride quality and fine handling. We haven't been happy with its austere interior, but cadillac has tried to soften it a bit and make it more inviting. It has helped reacquaint the world with cadillac's century-long tradition of technology and design innovation. In short, the cts presents a real, uniquely american alternative to traditional class leaders like the bmw 3 series and audi a4. lineupthe 2006 cadillac cts is available with two engines: a 210-horsepower, variable valve timing 2. 8-liter v6 30,515) and a 255-horsepower 3. 8-liter vvt v6 33,160). The package includes big brembo brakes and other high-performance tweaks.  safety features on all cts models include active features such as traction control and anti-lock brakes (abs) with brake proportioning, which balances the braking front and rear. There are eight airbags: front, side-impact airbags for front and rear passengers, and curtain-style head protections airbags on each side. In short, the cts comes with the full complement of safety features expected in a modern luxury car. walkaroundthe cts brought cadillac's new art & science design vocabulary to the marketplace. Embodied in the controversial evoq concept car, art & science is a festival of wedges, sharp junctions and chiseled angles that can be seen throughout the generation of cadillacs that followed, starting with the cts. This edgy design is certainly distinctive. Love it or hate it, there's no confusing a new cadillac with anything else on the road.  for all its futuristic themes, art & science is supposed to hark back to the cadillac tradition of vertical headlamps and tail lamps, which dates from the late 1950s through the '60s. Viewed from the front, the cts is imposing, with its large louvered grille framed by sharp, vertical headlamps. The front air dam is all business, with simple rectangular foglights and a long narrow intake near the skirt.  the cts also has a short, high rear deck with tall, vertical tail lamps. The view from the rear is broken up by the indentation cut widely around the license plate in a contrasting color. The cts-v looks a bit better here, thanks to body colored plastic. The rear view is evocative either way.  yet given the power of the front and rear ends, the cts's slab sides seem a little weak in comparison. It looks best with the largest wheels (18 inches) available.  for 2006, the v6-powered cts can be trimmed with the look of the 400-horsepower cts-v, without the monster engine. We like the optional sport appearance package, with fat, 18-inch wheels, aggressive rocker moldings, dual exhaust tips and a rear spoiler, mostly because the v6-powered cts models deliver enough sporting performance to pull it off. There are also three new paint colors: radiant bronze, blackberry and the flashy but expensive infrared option 900). interiorthe angular theme obvious in the exterior styling continues inside the cadillac cts. If critics have panned any particular thing about the cts since its launch in 2003, it's the interior aesthetics. The cts is sold in europe and the interior reflects that. It projects an idea that driving is serious business. Visually, it's an austere cabin, lacking the warmness of the recently launched cadillac sts.  cadillac seems to have taken some of that criticism to heart, because many of the changes since the cts was introduced are focused inside. The appearance of the instrument cluster was improved for 2005, though the gauges remain clear, straightforward and easy to read. There are also softer color packages, including cashmere, introduced for 2006. As it is, the interior is a mix of high-tech textures, some dimpled like a golf ball. Many of the materials are soft and interesting to the touch.  beyond aesthetics, the hardware works great. There's good support for the driver's right leg, and it's soft where the right shin touches. There's a good support for the left leg as well, with a good dead pedal for the left foot. Enthusiast drivers appreciate these for the bracing they provide during a spirited drive.  the three-spoke steering wheel has buttons for the sound system and cruise control, and is deliciously padded in leather for all but the part of the rim between about 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock, which is trimmed in wood. Changing the temperature, adjusting the stereo or operating the navigation system is easy and convenient in the cts. The center stack juts out from the rest of the dash, with the elaborate gps navigation system at the top center location. Climate controls are at the bottom, adjusted with amber-lighted pictograms.  the stereo works well, allowing quick and easy switching from a news channel on xm satellite radio to music on fm to traffic on am to a cd. The small triangular speakers for the optional bose system are mounted on the a pillar, and look cool. Onstar is standard, allowing drivers to make hands-free, voice-activated calls. The system comes standard in cars equipped with the navigation system. A driver can enter a destination into the navigation system, and then, aided by a color-coded display, obtain instant traffic data on the preferred route. The map display will show average speed along that route, as well as accident locations, construction and heavy traf. With the segment's only rear-hinged side access doors, the regular cab gives excellent recline space and an easy reach to everything dropped behind the seat. At the other end of the scale, premium models include two-tone leather seats, polished 22-inch wheels and other touches: within those extremes lies something for everyone.  2008 marks the first availability of an xl-grade supercrew with 5. 5- or 6. 5-foot bed: maximum people space with a work truck ethic. Detail changes for 2008 run the gamut from functional to decorative, the latter a wheels and stripes package for stx models, the former a standard tachometer for xl and stx with manual transmission, tire pressure monitors on the heavy-duty package, plus the availability of a cargo management system, remote start, telescoping towing mirrors, and a rearview camera (that does not require purchase of a navigation system).  with one of the deepest beds in the half-ton pickup segment, the f-150 has generous cargo volume out back and a maximum payload rating of 3,050 pounds. A foose edition f-150 designed by hot-rod master chip foose will be available as a late-2008 model. The base f-150 xl 17,345) is a short, regular cab two-wheel drive. Wheels are steel, the grille is black and bumpers painted, vinyl covers the floor and seats, and the audio is am/fm. However, it does have intermittent wipers, map lights, a 40/20/40 split bench front seat with driver lumbar adjustment, and on supercabs 23,440) air conditioning. Since it frequently adds other upgrades and a larger engine, 4wd adds almost $6,000 (and a v8) to the most basic example and $3,000 to the lowest-priced supercab.  stx models up the ante without going broke, with body-color front and rear bumpers and grille trim, air conditioning, cd player, and cloth upholstery. A 4x2 regular cab short bed starts at $21,050 and a 4x4 supercab flareside goes for $29,045; there is no stx supercrew.  central to the lineup, and sales, is the xlt. To an stx it adds chrome bumpers, black honeycomb grille, remote keyless entry, power mirrors/locks/windows, carpeting, auto headlamps, tinted windows, and better fabric for the 40/20/40 seat. Hefty rubber mats protect the carpet; other upgrades include a leather-wrapped wheel, unique instrument display, and sport cloth upholstery with driver and passenger lumbar support. Monotone paint includes the bumpers (gray with tow-tone paint), flares cover 18-inch aluminum wheels, and the door gets keypad entry. On regular cabs 24,105-30,645) the fx4 is $5,750 over the fx2 and there's no long-wheelbase fx4; on supercab and supercrew 28,700-35,445), the 4wd version is a $3,295 premium.  the lariat label is reserved for more luxurious, car-like interiors, and does not include regular cab or flareside models; retail prices range from $29,895-$35,595. Fancy bits include 18-inch aluminum wheels, power heated mirrors with signal repeaters, climate control, leather-trimmed seats and steering wheel, powered driver's seat, trip computer, light-faced gauges, and chrome and arizona beige trim.  for 2008, ford will build 5,000 lariat limited f-150s, replete with serial-number plates, spun-metal instrument cluster trim, two-tone leather cabin, color-matched grille and bumpers, and three-dimensional chrome bed side badging. Limited models are offered only as 139-inch wheelbase supercrews in two- 35,160) or all-wheel drive 38,160).  top tier among regular production models is the king ranch, with castano leather modeled after the saddles that roamed the texas ranch. Exterior trim is similar to lariats, with color-matching components and arizona beige accents. At this level, items such as heated power seats and power-folding mirrors are standard. And the 2008 ford f-150 shows the evolution of 70 years of function. Angular means easy to clean, easy to park and gives maximum inside volume for outside space. The f-150 is easily recognized in any trim level by the circular front lights within a rectangular housing, stepped front window ledge, opening rear doors on the regular cab, and the tall bed. For 2008, extendable dual-element towing mirrors bring the f-150 in line with the bigger super duty pickups, as well as the ram, titan, and tundra. Any cosmetic sacrifice is well worth the extra visibility with a trailer behind.  pillars between the doors may yield a blind spot for those who sit more rearward and everyone should appreciate the windshield pillar designed to help preserve forward vision. The flareside really is more stylish than the styleside bed, that which is essentially a box with some character lines in the sheetmetal, and more space within. The chrome harley badges are a bit much for some of us, but it drew many admiring looks. interiorford has all bases covered inside the f-150, with plenty of patterns, textures and finishes, including at least three different gauges clusters, and the choice of a 40/20/40 split-bench front seat or captain's chairs in many models. Captain's chairs on fx and lariat models, especially with power adjustment and the optional adjustable pedals, provide good driver positioning for virtually everyone. Finding it may take some time because the backrest angle adjustment is manual and the power controls are on the side of the seat with the door very close.

Also standard are latch child safety seat anchors, antilock brakes (abs) with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution (ebd), electronic stability control (vsc), traction control (trac), and a tire pressure monitor. walkaroundthe rav4 looks like other contemporary toyotas, featuring an aerodynamically efficient ovoid profile strategically relieved by sharp character lines. A coefficient of drag (cd) of 0. 33 is among the best in its segment and a major factor in minimizing wind noise and maximizing fuel economy.  the rav4's truck-like front end is tautly composed. Visually, the fenders are separate elements from the engine bay, a situation emphasized by a tight rectangular grille that seems to sit comfortably atop the wider bumper slits below. Headlights are compact and focused.  grille, bumpers, and fog light surrounds are all new for 2009. Most noticeable are the new, vertical brake scoops, lined with black ribs, that bite into the bumper beneath the headlights, where the fog lights used to be. (fog lights nestle into these scoops on sport models.) more subtle is the way the main grille now integrates better with the cooling slit just beneath it, while the formerly full-width slit beneath that has been replaced by three smaller slots.  limiteds have a look all their own, with a single, deep, trapezoidal grille opening bolding bisected by a body-color horizontal bar with a large, chrome toyota world-t badge at its center. A pseudo-skid plate wraps up from the bottom, leaving no room for additional lower air intakes. Tubular nacelles supporting the fog lights replace the brake scoops of base and sport models. None of these changes, fortunately, has affected the rav4's low coefficient of drag.  alloy wheels have five spokes on sport, six on limited. A wide track gives the rav4 a solid stance visually, while resisting rollovers in emergency maneuvers.  the side view is oblong, a mix of boxy and oval, the better to accommodate that third-row seat. The fat, triangular c-pillar with the taillight at its base reminds us of the subaru tribeca, a larger, seven-passenger suv priced a notch or two above the rav4. An understated indent runs along the bottom of the rav4's doors, softening the visual impression of bulk. The taillights are new for 2009, as is the bumper itself, but the changes here are more subtle than at the front. Taillights are positioned high on the rear fenders. The spare tire bolts into a recess offset to the right in the swing-gate, and doesn't dip below the bumper line. The rear license plate, sunk into the lower left side of the swing-gate below the handle, visually balances the spare. The sport model's spoiler hangs conspicuously off the top edge of the roof.  the new sport appearance package for 2009 eliminates the spare entirely, and centers the license plate up high beneath a bright metal strip that's just beneath another world-t badge that is just under the window. A bulge low down on the tailgate fills in the step in the standard bumper when the tailgate is closed. A handle on the left side still betrays the gate's swing-open design, but in spite of this the overall look with the sport appearance package is remarkably more car-like, more station wagon than suv. interiorinside, the 2009 rav4 is as good as ever, which is to say functional if a bit eccentric in style.  placement of the gauges will be familiar to anyone who has owned a previous rav4. The position and function of the controls populating the center stack is virtually the same as it has always been, which means very good; that also applies to the arrangement of the hand brake and the shift lever. The current dash is sharply split by a horizontal gash running the width of the car. About the only plus we found in this garish feature is a bi-level glove box, with an upper bin covered by a retracting lid and a lower bin fitted with a traditional, bottom-hinged cover.  materials are high quality. The standard seat fabric has been upgraded for 2009. Fit and finish is toyota grade, which means excellent. All three trim levels share the same motif, with contrasting but complementary colors and brushed metallic trim elements around the stereo and climate controls, surrounding the shift gate and swooping around the door handles. The standard side-curtain airbags still allow a passenger assist grip, which folds down.

Apart from the v6 engines, transmissions and those three-pointed stars little was carried forward.  while larger than its predecessor its dimensions reflect the class; very similar to bmw's 3-series and just a couple of inches shorter and less wheelbase than audi's 2009 a4. This is more evident on sport c models with the star in the grille than it is on the luxury models with more chrome and the traditional hood ornament. Wheels play a big part too, the sport cars using twin-spoke wheels with some attitude while the luxury versions use finer more elegant wheels.  closing the door brings a different sound than the old bank vault benzes did, perhaps because the outer skin of the doors, hood, front fenders and trunk is aluminum.
